We rely on our mobile devices for many things throughout the day — to check email, search, read news, catch up on sports, follow stocks, look up the forecast, and watch videos among others. Today we’re introducing a new Yahoo Mail app for iPhone and iPod touch so all the information that’s most important to you is right at your fingertips. We’ve designed it with a focus on simplicity: it’s the familiar Yahoo Mail experience, plus one-tap access to personalized, real-time information.
When you first open the Yahoo Mail app, you’ll see your Yahoo Mail inbox and a new panel with icons for Mail, News and Today at the bottom of the screen. This is where all your news, information, and communications come together in one integrated experience.
When you’re finished reading and replying to your email, see what’s happening in the world by tapping on the News icon. From celebrity gossip to the latest political news, you’ll find it in your personalized, visually rich news stream.
Let’s head over to the Today icon. Here’s where you’ll find a snapshot of the information you care about most every day and search — from your local weather to a news digest to the latest stock quotes and sports scores you care about.
We’re excited to bring you the latest version of Yahoo Mail for iPhone and iPod touch, and we hope you find it to be a simple way to access your Mail, news, and other information all within a single app. We’ll be rolling this out in the App Store to U.S. users over the next the couple of weeks. We would love to hear what you think, so please send us your feedback!
The app is now available in select international markets as of August 6, 2014.

This has been a very frustrating week for our users and we are very sorry.
For many of us, Yahoo Mail is a lifeline to our friends, family members and customers. This week, we experienced a major outage that not only interrupted that connection, but caused many of you a massive inconvenience — that’s unacceptable and it’s something we’re taking very seriously. Unfortunately, the outage was much more complex than it seemed at first, which is why it’s taking us several days to resolve the compounding issues.
So, what happened?
On Monday, December 9th at 10:27 p.m. PT, our network operating center alerted the Mail engineering team to a specific hardware outage in one of our storage systems serving 1% of our users. The Mail team immediately started working with the storage engineers to restore access and move to our back-up systems, estimating that full recovery would be complete by 1:30 p.m. PT on Tuesday.
However, the problem was a particularly rare one, and the resolution for the affected accounts was nuanced since different users were impacted in different ways. Some of the affected users were unable to access their accounts, instead seeing an outdated “scheduled maintenance” page which was a confusing and incorrect message (this has since been corrected and updated). Further, messages sent to those accounts during this time were not delivered, but held in a queue.
Over the remainder of the week, we worked around the clock to restore access and all messages to inboxes. This has included restoring IMAP access for people using other email programs like Outlook or Apple Mail to access their Yahoo Mail.
As of this afternoon, we’ve restored access to almost everyone and delivered the backlog of messages. We will continue to work on rolling out IMAP access and to fully restore inbox state (for example, which folders messages were placed in, which messages were starred, etc). This process differs for each user and as restoration continues, we’re committing to communicating directly with you on progress on an individual basis.
Above all else, we’re going to be working hard on improvements to prevent issues like this in the future. While our overall uptime is well above 99.9%, even accounting for this incident, we really let you down this week.
We can, and we will, do better in the future.

Today is Yahoo Mail’s sweet 16, and to celebrate we’re making our Mail experience elegant and intuitive on desktop, iOS, and Android.
We’re introducing “conversations” for those who prefer to view emails grouped in threads. At the end of the day, being able to see an entire conversation can save you quite a bit of time. Context is king.
We redesigned Yahoo Mail to be more efficient, too. Things you do all of the time like search, starring, and deleting are now one-click actions that appear when you hover over an email. We also wanted to give you more breathing room in your inbox, so you can collapse the left-hand toolbar to be more productive.
Since it’s not a birthday without party favors, we’re making many features previously reserved for premium Mail Plus customers free. Disposable email addresses, enhanced filters and automatic message forwarding are now available for everyone. And if that wasn’t enough, we’re giving you a monstrous amount of storage, 1TB (that’s 1,000 GBs), so you have ample space for all your emails and attachments. It sure beats one of those annoying noisemakers. Current Mail Plus customers can continue to use Mail Plus and can learn more here.
Finally, we wanted to bring a little inspiration into your inbox — dress it up a bit if you will. We’re doing that by introducing visually rich themes, including curated Flickr photos, for your browser, smartphone and tablet. Choose a new photo theme in one place, and it will apply across all your devices. After all, your inbox doesn’t have to be a plain white box with text dropped into it.
This new desktop experience is available in English in the US, Canada, UK, Philippines, Malaysia, India, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa with more countries and languages coming soon. The mobile apps are available globally today on iOS, Android and Windows 8.

At Yahoo, we’re constantly thinking about ways to protect our users and their data. In addition to second sign-in verification, we’re also launching today another way to make your account more secure: App Passwords.
An App Password is a temporary password that you can enter into our native iOS and Android apps for added protection. It’s a way that you can authorize a device to access your Yahoo apps.
Simply go into your account settings, turn on second sign-in verification, and then generate the one-time app password. Once you do, you can enter the password your mobile app, and it’s as simple as that. Your device will be logged-in, so you won’t have to go through this step again.
If you add another device, you’ll have to generate a new one-time App Password. Lost your phone? No problem, you can easily revoke access to each individual app and device from the settings page:
