Keeping the Internet Open & Free

By Margaret Nagle, Executive Director & Head of US Government Affairs

Right now, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is considering critically important rules around how best to ensure that the Internet remains an open platform for innovation.

At Yahoo, we firmly believe that a free and open Internet is critical to ensure our users have unfettered access to content and tools that enhance their lives.

We have urged the FCC to implement enforceable rules that ban paid prioritization, creating regulatory certainty for content providers such as Yahoo. These rules should apply to wired and wireless networks, so our users enjoy a comparable experience whether they access our services on their laptop or on a mobile device.

We encourage our users to learn more, including by visiting the Internet Association, checking out a letter we signed onto in May of this year, and visiting the FCC’s website to see the proposed rule and lend your voice to the discussion.

We’re committed to protecting a free and open Internet, and fighting to ensure that our users continue to  enjoy online content and tools — without disruption.

A New Publisher Solution: Yahoo Recommends

By Mike Kerns, Senior Vice President of Homepage and Verticals

At Yahoo, we understand the tools digital publishers need to monetize and develop their business. Over the years we have invested in and built world-class technology to support our media solutions. I’m excited to announce today that we are making that technology available to publishers across the web.

Yahoo Recommends is a technology that generates personalized content recommendations and a native advertising experience for users. The tool makes it easier for visitors to discover a publisher’s content and integrates an additional native advertising unit onto their site. We know first-hand that the combination of personalization and premium content works for users, and we’ve created Yahoo Recommends so publishers can put that powerful combination to work too.

image

Powered by Yahoo’s personalization technology, Yahoo Recommends comes in a variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate any site layout on PC or mobile — ensuring a seamless integration with any site and a fluid, relevant and transparent experience for readers.

To help publishers monetize, Yahoo Recommends includes clearly labeled sponsored ads. Premium and personalized ads featured on Yahoo Recommends are served through Yahoo Gemini, Yahoo’s unified mobile search and native ad marketplace. The launch of Yahoo Recommends represents the first time the marketplace has grown to carry inventory and serve ads beyond Yahoo’s own sites.

Digital publishers like CBSi, VOX Media and Hearst are already using Yahoo Recommends to both make discovery easy for visitors and monetize their sites. “We are pleased to be one of the first media companies to use Yahoo Recommends,” said Jim Lanzone, President and CEO, CBS Interactive. “The personalized content recommendations enable users to discover and engage with even more of CBS Interactive’s premium content.”

Publishers can also manage analytics with detailed reporting to understand how their content and ads are performing. Any publisher can start increasing engagement and revenue with three simple steps:

Two Key New Hires for Our Security Team

By Alex Stamos, VP of Information Security

The security of our users is a huge focus for us at Yahoo. We’re deploying encryption technologies across our platform, encouraging our partners to ensure that any data running on our network is secure, and improving the security of the overall web ecosystem.

We’re also focused on hiring the best talent to help us achieve our goals. That’s why I’m excited to introduce the two newest members of our security team: Chris Rohlf and Doug DePerry. Both Chris and Doug have incredible experience and are well-respected in the online security community. Chris and Doug will continue to be based out of New York, where they’ll further enhance our top notch security team, provide key trainings as we grow, and help us recruit the brightest minds in the software security space.

Chris and Doug come to us from Leaf Security Research, a security consulting firm known for its deep understanding of software security. The Leaf team has discovered and published critical vulnerabilities in every major web browser and other widely used applications. Chris and Doug have helped design and lead Leaf’s “Advanced C/C++ Source Code Analysis” training course, which educates participants on how to find exploitable vulnerabilities by manually auditing the source of large and complex programs. Chris and Doug have taught this unique course for public and private audiences, including at Black Hat USA 2013.

Chris and Doug will make a comeback to Black Hat USA this year — this time as Yahoos! — to teach their course on August 2nd & 3rd and again on August 4th & 5th. If you’re planning to be at Black Hat USA 2014, come connect with us at Mandalay Bay to learn techniques to find new vulnerabilities, and analyze code for exploitation primitives for target-specific exploitation.

We’re thrilled to welcome Chris and Doug to our team of talented security experts at Yahoo and look forward to seeing you at Black Hat USA 2014 this year!

Introducing Yahoo Beauty

By Bobbi Brown, Editor in Chief of Yahoo Beauty

I believe that true beauty comes from within. I’ve always said that beauty is more than makeup. It’s about how you take care of yourself, what you eat and drink, and what you do to celebrate your individuality. Today, I’m excited to debut Yahoo Beauty, a new digital magazine that we hope will inspire all of us to live beautifully.

This is a beauty magazine unlike any other. The first thing you’ll notice is the stunning photos and videos, which allow you to see the stories before you ever read them.  It’s where you will find your daily dose of beauty information — helping you feel confident for life’s important moments, whether you’re meeting your boyfriend’s family, or getting ready for your daughter’s wedding.  We’ll also have inspiring stories from interesting  people like Rula Jebreal, Palestinian journalist, author, and news anchor, Misty Copeland, soloist with American Ballet Theatre, and Lea Wallace, an aspiring Olympic competitive runner. Last but certainly not least, we’re bringing together luminaries and experts in the industry, including the talented Britt Aboutaleb, our new managing editor, as well as  my all-star editorial staff, who will  offer master class tutorials to give you answers to your everyday beauty questions.

I’m as passionate about wellness as I am about makeup. What you feed your body is just as important as what you put on it, so we’ll also share healthy recipes from some of my favorite places, as well as exercise routines and life lessons from people who have inspired me to live a balanced a life.

Yahoo Beauty  is for real women and men (we’ve got you covered, guys!), and I can’t wait to learn from our amazing team - and from you too!  Follow us at @YahooBeauty and share your beauty questions and experiences.

Yahoo News Digest Wins Apple Design Award 2014

By Nick D’Aloisio, Product Manager, Yahoo News Digest

Today Apple announced that Yahoo News Digest is a recipient for this year’s Apple Design Award and we are absolutely thrilled and honored.  To be recognized a second time by Apple, a company that has inspired millions of developers around the world to understand that simplicity can create enduring beauty, is something we are incredibly proud of.

Yahoo News Digest was created to serve people’s daily need to stay informed about the most important news and events around them. The algorithms, which were developed at Summly, smartly reduce stories to the most fundamental elements and meaningfully combine them with select point of views sourced from around the web. We take the Apple Design Award as a terrific reminder that innovation and beauty can be found in the care of the details.

Thank you to the amazing designers on the team who helped develop Yahoo News Digest and more importantly, our users who have made it an integral part of their daily lives.

Taking A Mobile-First Approach to Native Advertising

New opportunities with Yahoo Gemini enhance the experience for consumers and advertisers

By Ned Brody, Head of Americas

Over the past year, we’ve reinvented nearly all of our products to be more visually stunning and effortless for our audiences, and we have always believed that the advertising experience should be just as beautiful and engaging. Today, we’re excited to transform the advertising experience across Yahoo by rolling out new, image-rich native ads — designed to be mobile-first, seamlessly integrated with the content, and targeted to the right consumer to drive even better results. The new ads are available through Yahoo Gemini.

Every day, millions of people visit Yahoo to read the news, search for information, and check the weather, mail, sports scores or stock quotes from their smartphones and tablets. In fact, more than half of our global monthly active users come to Yahoo on a mobile device — and we are committed to delivering outstanding advertising that is designed specifically for mobile and integrated across our new experiences.

image

Available within the Yahoo Gemini marketplace, our new mobile ads include larger, richer graphics and photos for brand storytelling, combined with the performance brands need. While clearly marked as sponsored, the ads will look and act just like the content around them, and will appear within users’ personalized content streams, article pages and image galleries across Yahoo mobile and desktop products. When people tap on the ads, they can visit the brand’s site directly or view a full-screen visual for even greater interactivity and impact.

Top advertisers including Netflix are already using these new ad formats.

When advertising is a seamless part of the stories, photos and videos around it, it enhances the way people discover and share, while increasing engagement, recall, intent and favorability for advertisers. We’re excited to move toward a new mobile experience that brings together engaging content and even richer advertising.
